2024 has opened by proposing new commitments and new challenges

Dear friends of AICARM,

the year that has just begun immediately proposed some fundamental objectives to be at the service of our community of patients and doctors, addressing the most urgent problems on which to bring all the pressure and conviction of the Association to bear. I am referring to practical problems such as the shortage of the drug Nadolol, which is so important for ensuring patient safety, and the care of an increasingly present and effective Aicarm network. We have already reported on the dialogue between us and AIFA and taken measures to reduce the inconvenience as much as possible. Now it is a matter of confidently awaiting the intervention of the competent authorities to close the emergency phase.

As regards the organisation, we must meanwhile report with satisfaction that the presence of our volunteers at the cardiomyopathy clinic in Careggi has doubled, a sign of the growing commitment on the part of our members and all those interested in the activity of Aicarm.

In this newsletter we continue our offer of thematic information sheets by proposing the article by Emil Tsenov, an entrepreneur marketing consultant, who examines all the aspects inherent to the choice to implant a defibrillator. The author is involved in various initiatives in favor of patients.

Happy reading

Should I implant a defibrillator or not? The patient's perspective

A new information sheet for AICARM members. Emil Tsenov, entrepreneur and author of the novel "The Green Tunnel", in which he tells the story of a woman suffering from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, faces one of the most delicate choices patients can face, that of implanting a defibrillator. This is a brief summary of the text of the article which can be consulted on the AICARM website.

Cardiac arrest: how to improve complication-free survival after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Reflections on a study that appeared in Journal of the American College of Cardiology reporting the evolution of the incidence, management and prognosis of AC in athletes in France. The complication-free survival rate tripled. In Italy it is necessary to extend CPR training programs and increase the installation of AEDs, also involving middle and high school students and installing AEDs in all workplaces as well as in sports.

The presence of Aicarm volunteers at the Careggi facility has doubled

Since 9 January 2024, Aicarm volunteers have doubled their presence at the cardiomyopathy clinic of the Careggi university hospital, one of the most important Italian structures for the diagnosis and treatment of these heart muscle diseases.

The presence of volunteers also "covers" Tuesday afternoon, when the clinic receives patients suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy. Men and women often coming from all over Italy to whom the volunteers offer, before or after the visit, information on the association, its aims and its initiatives. In short, a service for the patient and his family, one of the most concrete and effective ways to translate Aicarm's aims into action: improving the quality of life of those affected by this disease and of those who live with them. In this way, in just over a year of activity, hundreds of people have come to know the Association.

The direct presence of Aicarm in the clinic (which the Association intends to extend to other specialized clinics in Italy) integrates the telephone service called "listening heart", activated just over a year ago with the aim of offering information and support to those suffering from cardiomyopathy. The service is run by specially trained volunteers and has provided answers and guidance to more than 200 patients since its inception.
