Longevity: Bridging the Gap Between Life and Health
When we talk about longevity, we often think about the years we live. This webinar invites us to shift our perspective: it's not just how long we live that matters, but how we manage to live, maintaining independence, peace of mind, and quality of life even with cardiomyopathy.
Medical research has allowed many people to live longer, but today the goal is to reduce the gap between years lived and years lived in good health. For those living with cardiomyopathy, this means viewing treatment as a continuous journey that involves the heart, but also the entire body, the mind, relationships, and daily choices.
Taking care of yourself: concrete and realistic advice
The speakers delivered a clear message: living well, even with cardiomyopathy, is possible when you establish a sustainable balance. Physical activity becomes a daily companion, to be practiced gradually and individually, always sharing decisions with your cardiologist. Regular exercise helps protect the heart, maintain muscle mass, and feel more energetic.
Nutrition is described as a fundamental ally. Rather than drastic solutions or passing fads, what works is a consistent and mindful approach: simple foods, balanced portions, attention to salt, sugar, and fat, avoiding DIY approaches and consulting with professionals.
Another key point concerns maintaining strength and muscle mass, which tend to decline with age and sometimes with therapies. Integrating targeted exercise and appropriate dietary choices can slow this process and preserve independence and safety. Sleep has also been recognized as an integral part of treatment: sleeping little or poorly affects cardiac balance, energy, and the ability to adhere to therapies.
Finally, it was emphasized that supplements, "natural" products, or dietary plans should not replace a discussion with your doctor. Every decision should be evaluated in the context of your medical history, because what appears harmless can interfere with treatment.
It's not just how long we live that matters, but how we manage to live, maintaining autonomy, serenity, and quality of life even in the presence of cardiomyopathy.
The patient as a conscious protagonist
A common thread throughout the meeting is the centrality of the patient. Understanding your disease, understanding the signs that warrant attention, asking questions, and participating in decision-making with your doctors helps you live with cardiomyopathy with greater confidence and peace of mind. Longevity, from this perspective, is not an abstract goal, but a journey of realistic daily choices, supportive relationships, and shared care.

Those living with cardiomyopathy must look at treatment as a continuous journey that involves the heart, but also the body in its entirety, the mind, relationships and daily choices.
