But what does “Expert” Patient mean?

The term expert patient was created in 1985 by prof. David Tucket of the University of Cambridge who stated that medical treatments would be more effective if doctors regarded patients as experts on their own pathologies.

The expert patient brings his skills and perception of his own situation to the therapeutic process, in close relationship with his doctor and with all the other health professions involved, so as to best represent his interests. Precisely for this reason we are committed to informing and educating him so that he becomes an aware protagonist of his own therapeutic choices.
