President Aicarm Aps

Dear friends of Aicarm,
this newsletter follows the traces of what is being experimented all over the world in search of new and more effective therapies for Cardiomyopathies patients. On June 18, the course-conference on the treatment of outflow obstruction in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy will discuss the results of treatments with beta-blockers, indicate the prospects that open up with new drugs and highlight how cardiac surgery remains a fundamental solution for young patients. The cardiac surgery experiences gained over the last twenty years in Florence, at the AOU Careggi directed by prof. Pierluigi Stefàno, and at the Monza Polyclinic with Dr. Paolo Ferrazzi.

Following our information line on drugs, we have then opened a column that will present works that come from institutions and pharmaceutical companies, both Italian and foreign. In the first issue we talk about a publication by the San Francisco biotechnology company Tenaya which is experimenting with an innovative gene therapy.

We also report the experience of Dr. Alessia Argirò who participated in ongoing research at the University of San Diego where the first gene therapy for a hereditary heart disease was developed. Finally, continuing in the series of thematic sheets, we publish a detailed article built on the Questions & Answers scheme on how important it is to "stop" smoking: dialogue between a family doctor and a smoker. The author is Dr. Mauro Pecchioli, general practitioner, involved in the fight against smoking for many years.
