Il Cuore Grande: a book, a therapeutic tool, an aid for patients and doctors
Dear friends of AICARM,
allow me to dedicate this monthly reflection to our latest initiative. The volume we created as an integral part of our communication activity has been available for a few days. It is entitled "The Great Heart, stories of women and men facing the challenge of cardiomyopathies", of which you will find an extensive review in this edition of the newsletter.
The book is part of that particular publicistic vein that is defined as "narrative medicine". A genre that includes different ways of storytelling, but all with the aim of making patients better understand their condition through words and images, while doctors can gain further knowledge on many aspects of the disease.
In this case, together with Laura D'Ettole and our other consultants, we have decided to collect twenty stories, told in the first person or in the form of an interview, accompanied by brief comments, useful for framing the paths described in a scientific and therapeutic way. It is not a simply "consoling" tool that involves emotions and feelings, but transmits a highly informative content, which can be the one that describes painful experiences, crucial decisions, concrete indications resulting from the narrators' experience.
The Big Heart it represents at the same time an arrival point of the first three years of our activity and a starting point on which to build our strategy to be at the service of the AICARM community in an increasingly shared and effective way.

Il Cuore Grande: twenty tales of pain and reality, of courage and rebirth
The Big Heart, stories of women and men facing the challenge of cardiomyopathies: this book was born around the stories of twenty patients, or their families, who belong to Aicarm (Italian cardiomyopathy association) and wanted to tell their stories. Laura D'Ettole, journalist, has collected, selected and written most of them; Franco Cecchi, president of Aicarm, ensured that explanation and scientific coherence were never lacking, not even in the construction of the book.

The patient expert in action: guidance and empathy of a "listening heart"
For a few months now, I have been giving some of my time as an AICARM volunteer to the Unit Cardiomyopathies of the AOU Careggi of Florence, currently directed by Prof. Iacopo Olivotto, whose activity began in the early 90s with Prof. Franco Cecchi, when these pathologies were practically unknown. Still only a few doctors, even cardiologists, have full knowledge of it and very few have clinical experience.
