The Order of Physicians of Florence has published an important document on antibiotic prophylaxis in dentistry, with particular attention to patients with cardiomyopathy. The document emphasizes that the use of antibiotics must be carefully evaluated to avoid the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.

For patients with cardiomyopathy, prevention of infective endocarditis, a rare but serious infection of the heart, requires special attention. The new 2023 European guidelines recommend antibiotic prophylaxis only for invasive dental procedures and only in patients considered to be at high risk, such as those with a history of endocarditis, prosthetic valves, or certain congenital heart defects.

However, the document highlights that good daily oral hygiene is as important as antibiotics in preventing infections. Patients should maintain a regular dental hygiene routine, visit their dentist regularly, and be alert for signs of infection. It is important to never take antibiotics without a prescription and always consult your cardiologist if you have any concerns.
